The Ravens have been mired in mediocrity in the six years since the Super Bowl run, and this is their chance to finally take the next step that has long eluded them. Wide range of possibilities The Ravens enter the final week of the regular season with an unusually wide range of possible outcomes, depending on how many of the AFC games shake out this weekend. The Ravens could easily find themselves out of the playoff picture entirely if they falter and the Steelers prevail. Yet, they could also wind up as high as the 2-seed in the AFC, earning a bye and home games against anybody other than the AFC West champions (likely the Chiefs). For this to happen, the Ravens would need to win (obviously), the Texans would need to lose to the Jaguars (possible), and the Patriots would need to lose to the Jets (pretty unlikely). The Patriots and Texans are both fighting for a bye themselves, so they have plenty of incentive to give it their all this week.

The Ravens' matchup against the Browns (7-7-1) is a pseudo-playoff game, especially when you consider the strong likelihood of the Steelers defeating the Bengals in their Week 17 matchup. If the Ravens lose, it's extraordinarily likely they'll once again find themselves on the outside looking in next month. With their head coach secure in his job safety and holding their own fate in their hands, the Ravens are focused on the task at hand and won't be taking Cleveland lightly. They're also remarkably healthy, as all 53 players practiced in some capacity on Friday, just two days before the biggest regular season game in recent memory for the franchise.
In other words, it's highly improbable that the Ravens end up that high. The easiest part of the equation is Colts-Titans, which simply has to have a winner and not end up as a tie. Should the Ravens make the postseason, the most likely spot is as the 4-seed. It would be almost impossible for them to end up as a wildcard (it would require multiple ties), so as long as they make it to the dance, they're almost certainly assured of at least one home playoff game. Ravens fans should certainly be rooting for the Texans and/or Patriots to lose, as the AFC West runner-up (likely the Chargers) would represent a major hurdle as the 5-seed facing the 4-seed in Wild Card weekend. Don't be fooled by their recent matchup in Los Angeles; the Chargers are as dangerous an opponent as the Ravens would find all postseason in the AFC bracket.
Can they finally close it out this time? Many key players on this year's team were around the past two seasons, so they've felt the heartbreak of both endings. The defense, in particular, has been maligned for an inability to close games in recent years, though this year's unit under Don "Wink" Martindale has had even more success in that area, save for a few ridiculous plays from Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City. If the Ravens fall on Sunday, it won't be for lack of motivation, both in terms of the playoff picture and in terms of proving this team is different. The front office has already made clear their intentions to keep John Harbaugh in Baltimore long term, and while that looks like an intelligent decision, whispers will definitely be heard from the fans if the Ravens can't get over the proverbial hump for a third consecutive season.
Baltimore is 29-19 all-time against the Browns, including an 18-3 record under John Harbaugh (9-1 at home). The start of a new rivalry? The Browns have lots of talent across the roster, and an earlier head coaching change might have had them in the postseason as early as this season. For as much credit as Gregg Williams and Freddie Kitchens deserve, rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield has been the driving force behind their late push. Mayfield looks like an immediate star in the NFL, and his impact has rippled throughout the division. All of a sudden, Cleveland looks like a force to be reckoned with for the foreseeable future, and Mayfield looks like a potential MVP candidate as early as next season.
Of course, none of this matters if the Ravens don't hold off the Browns. Win, and fans can start eagerly analyzing their postseason opponent. Learning from past mistakes This isn't the first time in recent years the Ravens have had control of their own playoff destiny. In 2016, they needed a Week 16 Christmas Day victory over their bitter rivals in Pittsburgh to stay alive, and a last-second touchdown from Antonio Brown sealed their fates. In the Ravens were guaranteed an AFC Wild Card spot if they could hold off the Bengals in Week 17. Cincinnati was playing out the string at that point, so the Ravens had all the motivation entering the game. Of course, the Ravens have a rookie QB sensation of their own, and Sunday represents the first of many future battles between the two. Lamar Jackson wasn't starting when the Ravens fell in overtime in Cleveland earlier this season, so while Mayfield's career record against the Ravens remains unblemished, we have yet to be treated to this matchup. Jackson and Mayfield play drastically different styles, but both have been impressive in early action as rookies. Both have led their teams to 5-1 records over their past 6 games, and both are looking to cap the regular season with a win. Mayfield is the likely Offensive Rookie of the Year in the NFL, but Jackson is the one with a chance to make an early playoff run. The Steelers and Bengals are too talented to disappear in future AFC North races, but if a rookie quarterback is the most valuable commodity in the sport then the Ravens and Browns are set to run the division in the years to come.
